Attack the Blocks was developed on top of Clash of Mini. We like what we got in Clash of Mini, however we  were wanting to add a bit more violent and intensity to give it more excitement. And then, we pick the thyme of Zombie-Apocalypse, because while its the end of the world, resources become more rare and valuable, so it makes sense for survivors to battle with whatever they can find, garbage bags, rocks, gas cans, etc. So the art style became more solid and turned to be sth like:

The core game mechanic maintains the same, only added more features such as pick-able bomb, and reflective STOP sign, also new maps and modes for experiment.

Until now, the product prototype was solid enough for us to evaluate and decide either keep working on it or shift direction for something different.

And we decide to maintain the art style but shift the direction with a different design on game mechanic. The main reasons were:

  • What works with the joy sticks on PSVita, does not fully works on touch screen, which the controlling system could be a bit frustrating, especially after play tested with many casual players, it further confirmed our concerns;

  • Also, the game style limited the depth of the game in terms of content generation and monetization;

Therefore, we quickly shifted gear and redesigned a brand new game Attack the Blocks. The reasons for giving it this name, mainly because all battles happens on the street in-between blocks - clear & take over a block is one step closer to the victory! Also because all characters in this game are 3D cubic characters, such as Lego characters or Mind-craft pixel style.

The theme was still Zombie - Apocalypse, still cubic style characters, but with SLG system and card collecting system, and the main character shifted in to a mechanical tank.

                                                                      &nbs…

                                                                               Yes, cubic tanks lol

The key mechanic and features are:

  • Player as a tanker operating tank against blocks of zombies to clear a pass for survivors to escape;

  • The tank can carry up to 4 soldiers, and through time, tank will gather skill points in battle to deploy soldiers to fight for it;

  • Each soldier has an unique weapon and stats, also different solder cost different amount of skill points;

  • Aside from basic attack, tank also can equip unique ability bomb, such as fire bomb, freeze bomb, etc;

  • The SLG system mostly associate with the Base Station, which players will need to upgrade their base to build new facilities and to craft new weapons and equipments, also farming and collecting materials for crafting, therefore, to simulate not just a battle game but also a survival game;

                                                                      &nbs…

                                                                                    Base Station

  The development of the product was really fun, the team keeps coming up with new ideas and added more layers to the product and make it entertaining!
